where the shadows are so deep, for voice and ensemble, was written in 2019.
Two works of art influenced this piece. On the one hand, the work of Fernando Pessoa, especially ‘The Book of Disquiet’, from which the text was taken. On the other hand, the name of the piece (where the shadows are so deep) comes from an exhibition at the Barbican Centre created by the Pakistani artist Imran Qureshi. There is something in Imran Qureshi’s work that has influenced me a lot and that I look for in my music: beauty in chaos, a contrast between the delicacy and brutality of the themes he addresses. In my case, the brutality I feel comes from the personal side, close to me or related to many internal struggles. In addition, Qureshi’s ‘Where the Shadows are so Deep’ shows me an idea of the persistence of life that I seek.
where the shadows are so deep was written during the project ‘The Times Academy’, supervised by Wim Henderickx, and in collaboration with HERMESensemble, and was premiered on 24 February 2019 at AMUZ, Antwerp. In addition to the original version of the work (in English), I created a Portuguese version at the end of 2019. This version is dedicated to conductor João Defeza.

Esta peça foi influenciada por duas obras de arte. Por um lado, a obra de Fernando Pessoa, principalmente “O Livro do Desassossego”, de onde o texto foi retirado. Por outro lado, o nome da peça (“where the shadows are so deep”) vem de uma exposição no Barbican Center criada pelo artista paquistanês Imran Qureshi. Há algo na obra de Imran Qureshi que me tem influenciado bastante e que procuro na minha música: a beleza no caos, um contraste entre a delicadeza e a brutalidade dos temas que aborda. No meu caso, a brutalidade que sinto advem do lado pessoal, próximo de mim ou relacionado com muitas lutas internas. Para alem disso, “Where the Shadows are so Deep” the Qureshi demonstram-me uma ideia de persistência da vida que procuro.
